Best LCD HDTV under $500
1. LG 32LH30 32-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV ($421.99~$499.00)
The LG 32LH30 provides a very clear picture for upscaled DVD movies and over the air digital signals. The speakers provide excellent sound for a small living room although the addition of a home theater system would substantially increase movie enjoyment. Standard definition signals also reproduce a stable clear picture. Colors are very good and the set provides sufficient tools to tweak the picture for personal preference. I have not used it for bluray as yet but HD from satellite is very good. The features of this unit described on the Amazon specifications list accurately describe its features and can be relied upon. I am not a hard core cinema/video buff but I cannot imagine that this unit will not satisfy most viewers who want a well priced midsized flat screen high definition TV. My five stars are based upon what I expect in similarly designed and priced units for a smaller room.
2. Panasonic VIERA TC-L32C12 LCD HDTV ($378.99~$458.77)
The Panasonic Viera C12 series , 32 inch tv is nice looking and has a variety of cable inputs. Both the remote and menu systems are top-notch and useful. This TV puts out true 720p resolution and has 4:3 ratio (standard, full-frame) and zoom scaling as well. For TVs 32 inches and under, 1080p (while nice) is not necessary, as you’d be hard pressed to notice a dramatic difference with your HDMI or component sources. The picture is super sharp, and the image control available with this TV is pretty impressive. You can really play with the picture and color. I was laughing at the ability to essentially reproduce that 60’s Technicolor supersaturation if you want. It really brings films to life. You can make up to 4 preset color choices, too- One for films, one for sports or live action TV, one for video games, one for kid’s cartoons, etc, etc.
3. Panasonic VIERA TC-L26X1 LCD HDTV ($339.12~$475.51)
The Panasonic TC-L26X1 LCD TV is a superb choice for an entry level 26″ set. Setup was a snap and the picture is great. Sound is so-so, but adequate for a small set. I hooked it up to a Samsung Home Theater and now the sound is fine. You should be aware, however, that the only audio out connection on this set is a Digital Audio Out port requiring a Digital Optical cable. This is only necessary if you want to connect the TV to a home theater or wireless headphones (also of the Digital Optical type). Very good 26″ LCD television and is just the right size in our guest bedroom.
4. Sony Bravia KDL-26L5000 LCD HDTV ($344.50~$459.00)
This Sony KDL-26L5000 26″ flat-screen tv is the best LCD of this size on the market. Super fine and detailed image quality, fantastic features, and very smooth sound. Very easy to setup and high-def TV looks excellent. The larger size is much appreciated, but the quality of the picture is beyond any I’ve seen. We have had other LCD HDTV sets, but this one far exceeds the picture quality of our other sets. No doubt there are cheaper LCD HD TVs out there, but you know when you get a Sony that you are going to get good quality. This Bravia series is no exception. The picture quality is astounding, especially when watching sporting events – you can see every face in the crowd. Highly recommended and worth the extra money.
5. Samsung LN32B360 32-Inch LCD HDTV ($469.97~$499.00)
Between the price, brand name, and overall quality we can expect from Samsung, it just made sense to buy this television set over Sony. This television was bought with the intention of not spending more than $500 and having it perform at least above average for bedroom. The options were exactly what I wanted: Computer input, 2 HDMI cable inputs, and multiple component inputs. It was 720P but after speaking with many owners and doing more and more research, it just isn’t worth the money to purchase a 1080p TV set ($700+) when you WON’T be able to tell ANY real difference under 40″ television sets – THAT IS A GUARANTEED FACT!
